What can we say about the defending champ that hasn’t already been said? We all know his speed, we have all seen his commitment, his racecraft, and his raw talent, but does he still have the hunger? That’s what the press and the other teams are wondering at the minute. He hasn’t done much in the pre season testing, with many unsure if he is done with the sport in a James Hunt type fashion. This year he teams up with the younger Pope at Williams which now has the potential to take the constructors championship with ease. This will however depend on the pair’s commitment and dedication and could easily spell disaster for this promising Williams team. Hopefully big Frank can keep these two in line.

The “heir to the throne” as he is often known by the other drivers, returns for another year behind the wheel. No one can question Pope’s talent or his willingness to go for the gap no reasonable driver would even consider, but can he get the results he needs this year? Pope has always been up there, challenging for races, podiums and at times the converted Evo F1 title. Sadly however he has struggled with inconsistent performances and has been caught in far too many incidents to ever put in a real claim to the throne. Maybe this year will be different, maybe this year he can calm his nerves and wrestle his talent into a title. This is the first year his older brother has had the upper hand in pre season testing, so it will be interesting to see how he responds. Will he rise to the challenge and be crowned King or crumble before his brother’s golden locks and remain an “heir to the throne”.
